An exceptionally docile and attractive terrestrial tarantula native to Peru. It features a velvety black body with a stunning metallic sheen on its carapace, making it a favorite for beginners.
Thrixopelma pruriens, often called the Peruvian Soft Velvet tarantula, is a highly regarded species in the hobby. Hailing from the diverse landscapes of Peru, this tarantula is well-suited for those looking for a hardy and low-maintenance pet. As a terrestrial species, it spends most of its time on the ground, growing at a moderate rate into a heavy-bodied and impressive adult specimen.
Appearance & Characteristics: This spider is known for its sophisticated look. Its body is covered in dense, dark setae that feel like velvet. The most striking feature is the vibrant metallic luster on the carapace, which can range from emerald green to copper tones depending on the lighting. The abdomen is highlighted by longer, reddish hairs, providing a beautiful contrast to its dark base color.
Temperament & Venom: One of the key reasons for its popularity is its extremely calm temperament. It is a slow-moving species that rarely shows defensiveness, making it very manageable for novice keepers. While it does possess urticating hairs as a primary defense mechanism, it rarely uses them unless significantly provoked. Its venom is mild and not medically significant, making it a very safe addition to any collection.
Husbandry: In captivity, it requires a terrestrial setup with adequate floor space. A deep substrate layer consisting of coco fiber or peat moss is recommended to support its natural behaviors. Maintain temperatures between 24-26°C and a moderate humidity level. Providing a cork bark hide and a shallow water dish is essential for its well-being.
