Appearance & Characteristics Tliltocatl epicureanus (transferred from the genus Brachypelma during the 2020 taxonomic revision) is a beautiful terrestrial tarantula endemic to the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. Adult females reach a robust body length of 7-8 cm with a total legspan of around 15 cm. The species showcases a striking contrast between a velvety black carapace and legs, and dense, rusty-red or bright orange setae covering the abdomen. At the size of 0.5 cm, spiderlings are typically uniform light brown and will develop their signature adult coloration gradually over successive molts.

Temperament & Venom Often compared to its close relative Tliltocatl vagans, the Yucatan Rust-rump is a calm and predictable New World tarantula. It is considered a docile species that prefers to retreat into its burrow when disturbed. If persistently annoyed, its primary defense mechanism is kicking urticating hairs from its abdomen. Its venom is very mild and poses no medical threat to healthy humans, making daily maintenance and rehousing stress-free.

Husbandry & Care Caring for this species is straightforward due to its resilience. A standard 30x30x20 cm enclosure is perfectly suitable for an adult specimen. Provide a thick layer of substrate, such as coco coir or a peat moss mix, to support its natural burrowing tendencies. The environment should be kept relatively dry to moderately humid, aiming for 60-70% humidity, with a water dish always available. Maintain daytime temperatures between 24-26°C. Adding a piece of cork bark as a starter hide will help the spider settle in quickly.
