The Avicularia metallica Cayenne is a breathtaking arboreal tarantula, highly sought after for its unique aesthetic. This variety from French Guiana is characterized by an exceptionally intense metallic luster. Adults are deep navy blue, covered with long, light hairs that give them a "frosted" appearance. A key feature of the Avicularia genus is the bright pink tips on their legs (tarsi), contrasting beautifully with the dark body.
Temperament and Venom: This species is known for its docile nature and rarely shows aggression. When threatened, it usually opts for a quick retreat or, occasionally, uses the genus-specific defense of firing excrement at the intruder. They lack urticating hairs that can be kicked off, making them more comfortable to handle. Due to the sensitivity of spiderlings to stagnant air, this species is recommended for keepers with some intermediate experience in arboreal care.
Husbandry requirements: A 1.5 cm spiderling needs a vertical enclosure with excellent, preferably cross-ventilation to prevent air stagnation. Maintain high humidity (around 80%) and temperatures between 25-28°C. Essential decor includes vertical cork bark and artificial plants, which the spider will use to construct its dense, silken tube web.
