Lasiodora parahybana (0.5cm) - Brazilian Salmon Pink

Lasiodora parahybana, widely known as the Brazilian Salmon Pink Birdeater, is a true icon in the tarantula-keeping hobby. Native to the arid, steppe regions of eastern Brazil, it is one of the most popular choices for both novices and seasoned keepers alike. Its popularity stems from its monumental size and exceptional hardiness. This tarantula grows very quickly, allowing keepers to witness significant size changes after every molt.

Appearance & Characteristics This species is characterized by its robust build and dark, near-black coloration adorned with distinct pinkish or salmon-colored hairs. Adult females can reach an impressive body length of 9-10 cm. With their expansive leg span, a mature specimen can easily cover a human hand, making it one of the largest spiders available on the market today.

Temperament & Venom The Salmon Pink Birdeater is famous for its incredible prey drive and enthusiastic feeding response. It is a highly active tarantula that frequently remains visible on the substrate surface rather than hiding. While not generally aggressive toward humans, it can be skittish and defensive. When threatened, its primary defense is kicking urticating hairs from its abdomen, which can cause irritation. Its venom is considered mild and medically insignificant to healthy humans.

Husbandry Given its eventual size, an adult requires a spacious terrestrial enclosure. A substrate of coconut fiber or peat moss is ideal for maintaining the necessary humidity. During the day, temperatures should be kept between 25-28°C, and humidity should be maintained at around 75%. Providing a solid hide, such as cork bark, and constant access to a shallow water dish is essential for the spider's well-being.
