Homoeomma chillensis (0.5cm)

Homoeomma chilensis (formerly known as Euathlus sp. red) is arguably the most desirable dwarf tarantula in the world. Native to the unique mountainous regions of Chile, this species has evolved to be hardy and adaptable. Its slow growth rate is more than compensated for by its inquisitive and calm nature, making it a "pet rock" that many keepers find absolutely charming.

Appearance & Characteristics This tarantula features a stocky build and elegant, earthy tones. The primary colors are deep browns and blacks, which may show a subtle metallic sheen on the carapace under bright light. Many specimens display reddish or coppery highlights on the abdomen. Its legs are proportionally shorter and robust, reflecting its terrestrial lifestyle and preference for staying close to the safety of its burrow.

Temperament & Venom The temperament of Homoeomma chilensis is what truly sets it apart. It is exceptionally docile and slow-moving. Crucially, this species rarely shows a tendency to flick urticating hairs from its abdomen, which is a highly sought-after trait among New World tarantulas. Its venom is very mild, and the spider is almost never defensive, choosing to stay still or slowly retreat when disturbed. It is widely considered the safest species to work with in the hobby.

Husbandry Keeping this species is very straightforward. A terrestrial-style enclosure is required. A substrate mix of coco fiber and sand is ideal to mimic its natural Chilean habitat. They prefer moderate temperatures and do not require high humidity levels, though a small water dish or occasional light misting is recommended. Adding a piece of cork bark or a small plant will provide the spider with the necessary cover to feel secure.
