Appearance & Characteristics The Grammostola pulchra, or Brazilian Black, is a true icon of the tarantula hobby. At this size, the young male is progressively darkening, moving away from its early spiderling grey tones, though the final jet-black, velvety appearance will fully manifest as it matures. Known for their heavy-bodied build, these spiders are slow-growers but remarkably robust and long-lived. Their transition into adulthood is a fascinating process to observe for any keeper.

Temperament & Venom This species is widely celebrated for its extremely docile temperament. Even as juveniles, these males are generally very calm and predictable, rarely showing any defensive posturing. They move in a deliberate, slow manner, making enclosure maintenance stress-free and enjoyable. Their venom is very mild, medically insignificant to humans, which combined with their placid personality makes them one of the safest tarantulas to keep.

Husbandry Native to the temperate regions of Brazil and Uruguay, G. pulchra thrives at comfortable room temperatures between 24-26°C. As a terrestrial species, it requires a setup with ample floor space and a layer of substrate for natural activities. They prefer moderate humidity levels (60-70%). This is a very hardy species that adapts well to captive environments. A simple setup with a hide and a water dish is all they need to grow successfully through their upcoming molts.
