A stunning terrestrial tarantula from Colombia, known for its vibrant orange legs and contrasting dark body. A fast-growing and visually striking species for intermediate keepers.
The Megaphobema robustum, commonly known as the Colombian Giant Redleg, is a true gem of the South American rainforests.
Appearance & Characteristics: This species is highly sought after due to its incredible coloration. It features a velvety black cephalothorax and abdomen, beautifully offset by vivid orange-to-red legs. It is a robustly built spider that adds a splash of color to any invertebrate collection.
Temperament & Venom: While its venom is considered medically insignificant, this species is known for being quite skittish. Instead of biting, it often uses a unique "cartwheel" defense mechanism, spinning rapidly to ward off perceived threats. Additionally, it will flick urticating hairs from its abdomen when disturbed, which can cause skin and eye irritation. Its speed and defensive nature make it best suited for intermediate keepers.
Husbandry: Proper environmental conditions are vital for this species. Unlike many tropical spiders, M. robustum prefers slightly cooler temperatures, ideally between 22-25°C. High humidity (around 80%) is essential. The enclosure should provide plenty of space for burrowing, with a deep layer of moist substrate (at least 10-15 cm) to accommodate its natural digging instincts.
