One of the most sought-after arboreal tarantulas in the world. Famous for its incredible, velvety coloration that shimmers with intense purple in adults.
Appearance & Characteristics Avicularia purpurea, commonly known as the Purple Pinktoe, is a true gem of the Ecuadorian rainforests. While 1cm spiderlings start with a dark, bluish tone, they transform with every molt into something spectacular. Eventually, the spider becomes covered in dense black hair that reflects a deep, royal purple sheen under light. True to the Avicularia genus, it also features the characteristic lighter-colored tips on its legs.
Temperament & Venom This tarantula is known for its exceptionally docile temperament. It is not aggressive and prefers to flee or jump when disturbed. As a highly agile arboreal species, it builds intricate tube webs high in the trees (or the upper corners of its enclosure). Their venom is very mild, making them an excellent choice for hobbyists looking to start their journey with arboreal species.
Husbandry As an arboreal species, it requires a vertically oriented enclosure. The most critical factor in keeping A. purpurea successfully is providing excellent ventilation (cross-ventilation is highly recommended) and high humidity (around 80%). These spiders are sensitive to "stale air," so good airflow is vital for their well-being. The enclosure should include climbing materials like cork bark and plants, which the spider will use as anchors for its thick silk retreats.
